Grand Challenges Scholar, Spring 2026
Aditi Rao
Originally from Pune, India, Aditi Rao chose biomedical engineering at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University to explore the complexity of physiological systems while contributing to the development of meaningful medical technologies. What excites her most about the field is its interdisciplinary nature and capacity for bridging programming, electronics, materials science and biology to solve real-world health care challenges. She emphasizes that this breadth not only equips students with a strong technical foundation but also opens doors to a wide range of engineering and medical career paths.
A defining moment in Rao’s academic journey came during fall 2023 while working on her Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative project. Investigating silk as a biomaterial, she designed experiments that brought together differential equations, organic chemistry and orthopedic tissue applications. That experience reinforced her passion for biomedical engineering and solidified her interest in research at the intersection of engineering and medicine.
Since February of 2023, Rao has worked closely with her mentor Vincent Pizziconi, an associate professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, part of the Fulton Schools. Under his guidance, she developed critical thinking skills and expanded her technical and professional experience through hands-on research. She credits his mentorship as a cornerstone of her undergraduate journey.
Beyond the lab, Rao made a significant impact as president of the Biomedical Engineering Society. She strengthened partnerships with major medical technology companies, creating new opportunities for students to network, secure internships and launch their careers. Her efforts helped expand the organization’s reach and tangible value to its members.
Her dedication to research and leadership has earned her notable recognition, including the Outstanding Student Researcher award from the Grand Challenges Scholars Program and the Outstanding Undergraduate BME Researcher award from the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering.
After graduation, Rao plans to enter the medical technology industry, focusing on electrophysiology and cardiology. Long term, she hopes to contribute to breakthroughs in cardiovascular health through innovations in medical devices and biomaterials by advancing technologies that improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for patients with cardiac conditions.
Her advice to future engineers: be proactive and create your own opportunities.
“Networking is key,” Rao says. “Don’t be afraid to reach out, ask questions and explore. Sometimes all it takes is starting the conversation.”
