Grand Challenges Scholar, Spring 2026
Czyra Argonza
Czyra Argonza’s journey is defined by curiosity, creativity and a fearless embrace of the unknown.
Originally from Laguna, Philippines, she was drawn to the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University for its global community and commitment to innovation and sustainability. Within the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, part of the Fulton Schools, she found a place where her technical ambitions and creative instincts could thrive.
Her path into engineering began when her sister’s friend said, “with engineering, you can design and build anything.”
“That single line was enough to flip a switch in my mind, showing me the limitless possibilities that engineering and creativity can unlock,” Argonza says.
This spark, combined with inspiration from films like Iron Man and Big Hero 6, inspired her to consolidate her love for math, biology and imagination into biomedical engineering.
That mindset came to life through her hands-on work on her team’s project capstone project, where she contributed to the design of a mechanical torque device for endovascular procedures and tackled the inefficiencies surgeons face when manually controlling interventional tools.
She also conducted space medicine research through the ASU Interplanetary Initiative, analyzing life-support systems and human physiological limits in lunar conditions. Her work supported the broader Lunar Minimum Viable Infrastructure project, which aimed to build sustainable infrastructure on the Moon.
Beyond research, Argonza has been a dedicated leader and community builder.
She was involved in the Biomedical Engineering Society, the Society of Women Engineers and the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers. In each of these organizations, she built life-changing communities and connected students with real-world career pathways, reinforcing her belief that success is not linear and exploration is essential. She was honored by the International Students and Scholars Center with the Inspiring Global Citizen Award for her efforts supporting community values and practices.
Among her proudest accomplishments is that she has become a leader within her communities. Whether in labs, projects or leadership roles, she embraced visibility, often standing out with her bright pink hair and expressive style. Younger students began approaching her, sharing that her presence inspired them to pursue technical fields.
For Argonza, representation shapes outcomes. She believes engineering decisions are influenced by who is at the table and that increasing diversity is essential to addressing overlooked problems like gaps in women’s healthcare.
Looking ahead, she hopes to enter the biomedical industry, particularly in vascular technology, though she’s equally open to wherever opportunity leads. As an international student who once packed her life into suitcases to move across the world, she has learned to embrace uncertainty with confidence.
