Grand Challenges Scholar, Spring 2026
Luke Houtz
Luke Houtz’s path to Arizona State University wasn’t part of the original plan. Growing up in Chester, New Jersey, he expected to stay closer to home — until a last-minute decision during his senior year of high school changed everything.
“I applied to ASU on a whim,” Houtz says. “Looking back, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made.”
At ASU, Houtz carved out a college experience that reflects both his technical ambitions and his wide-ranging interests as he pursued dual degrees in mechanical engineering from the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU, and politics and the economy from The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at ASU, along with a certificate in international relations.
“I’ve always been interested in how systems work, whether that’s machines or governments,” he says. “Engineering and politics both shape how people live, just in different ways.”
His interest in engineering began in high school, where he developed a preference for designing and building physical systems. Mechanical engineering, with its breadth and flexibility, felt like a natural fit.
That interest was solidified during an internship with TSMC, where Houtz worked on the company’s Automatic Material Handling System, a robotic network that transports semiconductor wafers across the facility. The experience gave him hands-on exposure to large-scale engineering systems and confirmed his interest in robotics and manufacturing.
“That’s when I knew I was on the right path,” he says.
Through his second degree, Houtz says he has maintained a longstanding interest in U.S. politics, particularly in elections, political mapmaking and other data-driven aspects of the field.
“I felt it would give me some more business-oriented skills relevant to my future career as an engineer on top of the political science education that I was seeking,” Houtz says.
One of the most impactful experiences of his time at ASU came during a semester abroad at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he continued his engineering coursework while gaining a global perspective.
“I had such a positive experience during my semester abroad that I was inspired to help other ASU students find the right opportunity for them,” Houtz says.
Following his return, he became a student recruiter for ASU’s Global Education Office, helping encourage other students to pursue international experiences.
After graduation, Houtz will return to TSMC as an intelligent manufacturing engineer in the Phoenix area. Before starting full time, he plans to travel extensively across Asia.
Looking ahead, he hopes to use his engineering skills to make a meaningful impact.
“I just want to do work that improves people’s lives,” he says.
