Grand Challenges Scholar, Spring 2026
Ayomide Laguda
Ayomide Laguda’s path to engineering began with coding languages and curiosity, but was fueled by a desire to build something new and impactful.
“When I was younger, I enjoyed designing games and creating web pages, but it wasn’t enough,” he says. “I didn’t want to just focus on existing products. I wanted to lay the groundwork for new ones and build systems for others to use.”
That innovative mindset led him to enroll in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
In his first-year, Laguda knew he was on the right path academically. An “aha!” moment formed as he began enjoying his programming lab assignments — work that had previously felt monotonous.
“I became increasingly interested in the concepts taught in my early classes, which helped greatly in my junior and senior years,” he says.
Also a student in ASU’s Barrett, the Honors College, Laguda participated in challenging research opportunities, including the Barrett College Fellows Program, where he analyzed synthetic RNA expression data in the Collective Logic Lab. He also gained experience in the field of power electronics in the Miniaturized and Advanced Power Electronics Laboratory as part of the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative.
“At first, I assumed students were given detailed instructions on how to complete each task assigned,” he says. “I was surprised to learn that research projects at ASU are frequently self-directed and mentors give you space to grow and learn how to solve problems on your own.”
During his time at ASU, Laguda earned numerous scholarships, was recognized on the Fulton Schools Dean’s List and was a recipient of the ASU Moeur Award.
“The Garmin Scholarship Fund and the Texas Instruments Scholarship enabled me to continue attending ASU during my junior and senior years. I am eternally grateful to the donors who invested in my future,” he says.
Outside of the classroom, he served as a student ambassador in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, part of the Fulton Schools, where he supported incoming undergraduates through recruitment events, promoting involvement in engineering clubs and leading virtual sessions on how to navigate scheduling classes and advising appointments.
After graduating, Laguda plans to continue his studies at ASU in the electrical engineering Accelerated Master’s degree program, where he strives to master the skills required for a successful career involving very large-scale-integration for integrated circuits.
