Grand Challenges Scholar, Spring 2026
Jamie Akbari-Carpenter
Jamie Akbari-Carpenter is drawn to the precision of calculus and the complexity of biological systems. At the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, she found a path in biomedical engineering that enabled her to transform curiosity into innovation.
A student in Barrett, The Honors College, Akbari-Carpenter demonstrates academic excellence alongside a strong commitment to research, mentorship and community. While her interest in biomedical engineering began with a passion for math and science, her experience has broadened that perspective.
“This field isn’t just about being a ‘jack of all trades,’” she says. “It’s about learning to step back, consider multiple perspectives and design solutions that address complex problems.”
Motivated to gain hands-on research experience, Akbari-Carpenter joined the research lab led by Barbara Smith, an associate professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, part of the Fulton Schools, where she worked on improving optical systems for neurological applications.
Akbari-Carpenter completed projects through the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative, presented at the Biomedical Engineering Society Conference and worked on her thesis.
Through these opportunities, she has gained technical expertise while strengthening skills in resilience, long-term project management, academic writing and experimental design. She credits her growth to mentors and peers, who supported her throughout her academic journey.
“From stressful moments to last-minute project demands, I’ve been surrounded by a supportive community every step of the way,” she says.
Beyond research, Akbari-Carpenter has contributed as a tutor and class supervisor for the Joaquin Bustoz Math-Science Honors Program, supporting high school students in their transition to college-level coursework.
“As a former student of the program, it was meaningful to give back,” she says. “I got to watch students build confidence and develop critical thinking skills. It was an honor to be part of that journey.”
After graduation, Akbari-Carpenter plans to remain in Arizona to gain industry experience before pursuing a doctoral degree. She aims to continue research that advances health and quality of life, particularly in vision and neurological health.
Her advice to students considering engineering as a major and a career is to engage in every opportunity.
“Do it,” Akbari-Carpenter says. “It’s challenging and sometimes overwhelming, but when you look back at what you’ve accomplished, you’ll feel empowered to make real change in the world.”
