Grand Challenges Scholar, Spring 2026
Kushagra Dashora
Robotics is often associated with replacing human labor or building sci-fi machines, but Kushagra Dashora thinks about it as improving quality of life and augmenting human capabilities.
Dashora, a Grand Challenges Scholar, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in engineering with a concentration in robotics from The Polytechnic School, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
He was drawn to study engineering because of how it combined mechanical, electrical and software systems. The Polytechnic School’s hands-on, project-based approach was especially appealing to him.
“I knew I wanted to tackle complex, multidisciplinary problems, especially those with direct medical and surgical applications,” Dashora says.
As part of the Grand Challenges Scholar Program, Dashora chose the National Academy of Engineering’s Joy of Living theme, reflecting his commitment to human-centered engineering. That focus also shaped his involvement with Devils Prosthetics, where he applied robotics concepts to work designed to improve people’s daily lives.
“Being actively involved in the creation of myoelectric prostheses as a member of Devils Prosthetics, I am motivated by the understanding that engineering must address not only technological issues but also help people feel better,” Dashora says.
One of his most meaningful accomplishments was his work at the Academic Support Network tutoring center. Over nearly four years, he progressed from subject area tutor to peer lead, mentoring more than 1,000 students and helping them navigate rigorous coursework.
He also embraced leadership opportunities, serving as the Polytechnic campus president for the Fulton Ambassadors and as a student leader in the Grand Challenges Scholar Program. His contributions earned recognition, including Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leader of the Year and the Best Legacy Award. He encourages others to get involved and use the resources available while at ASU.
“Get involved in hands-on projects like Devils Invent as early as possible, and don’t be afraid to use the tutoring centers,” he says. “The concepts are tough, but there is a massive community of peers ready to help you succeed.”
Dashora will continue at ASU in the Accelerated Master’s degree program in robotics and autonomous systems, focusing on systems engineering. He aims to keep developing technologies that not only advance engineering, but make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
