Outstanding Graduate, Spring 2026

Esther Low

Outstanding Graduate Esther Low is driven to improve health care through innovation, equity and understanding. Graduating from Arizona State University with dual degrees in biomedical engineering and global health from the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, respectively, Low has intentionally built an academic path that bridges the science of the human body with the complexities of healthcare systems worldwide.

“I wanted to understand not just how the body works, but how health care works for different populations,” Low says. “That intersection is where meaningful change happens.”

During her time at ASU, she immersed herself in research focused on increasing accessibility to medical technology. Through Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative, or FURI, she worked on improving a saliva-based disease diagnostic device, which she says is particularly valuable in rural and resource-limited settings.

As chair of the Student Advisory Board in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, part of the Fulton Schools, she served as a bridge between students and faculty, ensuring that student voices shape the biomedical engineering curriculum. She has led initiatives that foster open dialogue between students and faculty, strengthening collaboration and improving the academic experience for future cohorts.

Her passion for service is equally evident in her role as co-founder and co-president of Sun Devil Swipes, a student organization dedicated to combating food insecurity on ASU campuses in partnership with the Pitchfork Pantry.

“Giving back to the community that has impacted my life so much is essential,” she says.

Her leadership, research and service have earned her numerous recognitions, including Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Senior, the ASU Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Student Servant-Leadership Award and a Leadership Scholarship Program awardee.

Low has also presented her research at national conferences, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society for Engineering Education conferences, Harvard University’s National Collegiate Research Conference, and ASU’s Conference for the Governance of Emergent Technologies and Science. These experiences broadened her perspective and connected her with a diverse community of researchers tackling global challenges.

Looking ahead, Low will continue at ASU as she pursues her master’s degree in biomedical engineering while deepening her involvement in research.

“I want to contribute to discoveries that improve patient outcomes while also working towards a career to mentor the next generation of engineers,” Low says.
