Vivek Gupta
Assistant Professor, Computer science and engineering
“This journey has been a thrilling adventure of continuous learning and discovery,” Vivek Gupta says.
The computer scientist and emerging innovator in artificial intelligence, or AI, connected with a love of technology as a teen. Initially driven by a desire to use computers to solve necessary problems, he came to believe that an imaginative intersection of humans and AI could revolutionize key industries.
After receiving his doctoral degree in computer science from the Kahlert School of Computing at the University of Utah, Gupta served as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. There he began his work in natural language processing, or NLP. His efforts paid off. Gupta was awarded the Bloomberg Data Science Fellowship as well as the Microsoft Research Fellowship and received the Ericsson Innovation Award, India.
As a new assistant professor of computer science and engineering in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, part of the Ira A Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, Gupta will continue his AI research. He believes ASU is the perfect place for the next stage of his career.
“The school’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI research, combined with its collaborative environment among top-tier faculty and research centers, makes it an ideal place for me to contribute and grow professionally,” he says.
Gupta will begin teaching in the spring and is excited to help progress the work underway in the Fulton Schools. He will develop an advanced AI course focused on handling complex data types. Gupta also hopes to create a curriculum for a new class that serves as an introduction to critical topics in NLP, including how to evaluate bias. He is actively recruiting doctoral students to join him in his research group, COmplex Data Reasoning and Analysis Lab, or CORAL.
When not hard at work, Gupta tunes into “Big Bang Theory” and “Friends,” enjoys playing badminton, is an enthusiastic fan of international cricket and likes to whip up a delicious dinner. He is looking forward to exploring the walking and running paths that surround the ASU Tempe campus.
He hopes fellow faculty members will see him as an enthusiastic and engaged collaborator while he wants to ensure students know he is ready to help them succeed.
“My inbox and door are always open for transparent communication,” Gupta says. “I firmly believe that we are all capable of accomplishing extraordinary things if given the chance.”
