Mostafa Yourdkhani

Arizona State University is widely recognized as one of the most innovative universities in the nation, known for its forward-thinking academic environment and commitment to research. This reputation has attracted Associate Professor Mostafa Yourdkhani to the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

With expertise in composite materials and structures, multifunctional materials, advanced manufacturing and additive manufacturing, Yourdkhani’s interest in engineering was first sparked by the field’s creative nature and applications to fundamental science. 

“The dynamic nature of engineering research, combined with the opportunity to integrate discoveries from various disciplines, is exciting to me and keeps me engaged and passionate,” Yourdkhani says.

Early in his research career, Yourdkhani became fascinated by advanced manufacturing and materials. As these fields continue to progress, he believes new advancements present an opportunity to develop technologies for automated manufacturing of fiber-reinforced composites, supporting a sustainable future.

Yourdkhani did his graduate studies at McGill University in the department of mechanical engineering. His doctoral research focused on processing the science behind polymer nanocomposite and composite materials.

In the classroom, he uses everyday dilemmas to introduce fundamental concepts and demonstrate their direct applications. Yourdkhani says students taking his classes should be prepared for highly interactive and engaging sessions.

“My courses will require critical thinking and active learning and will encourage students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical engineering problems.”

Maintaining an active research program, he welcomes motivated, creative and hardworking students to join his research group. He believes labs are spaces where students can contribute to cutting-edge research, pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology. 

Yourdkhani is looking forward to joining a dynamic community where interdisciplinary collaboration is emphasized.
