Malle Schilling
Assistant Professor, Engineering programs
Solving problems and making engineering education more equitable and inclusive for all students is what drew Malle Schilling to her field of study. Inclusion and the dedication to student success is what attracted her to teach at Arizona State University.
“I chose to come to ASU because I see this as an environment that enables you to be creative and to think differently in pursuit of knowledge and to spread the impact of research and teaching,” she says.
Schilling, an assistant professor in The Polytechnic School, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, is excited to get to know the students and faculty members in the engineering education systems and design program and collaborate with others across the institution.
“I strongly believe that our work is strengthened in community and through partnership with others, and I am excited to forge new relationships with colleagues and collaborators,” Schilling says.
She will be teaching both undergraduate and graduate students in her courses. Students should be prepared to be challenged to think differently and reflect on the impact they can make in their current and future work.
Schilling is also looking forward to working with students who are eager to learn more about engineering education research. Areas she has researched include pathways to engineering for rural youth, organizational capacity for partnership in K-12 and community engagement contexts, and middle school students’ conceptualizations of engineering and systems thinking.
She originally decided to pursue engineering as a career to think about the world and solve problems in new and different ways. Schilling’s progress in this goal so far has earned her a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, recognition as an Emerging Engagement Scholar by the Engagement Scholarship Consortium and the Bevlee A. Watford Outstanding Doctoral Student Award from the Department of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech.
Schilling regularly attends relevant conferences and is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and Tau Beta Pi.
In her spare time, Schilling enjoys fantasy and science fiction books, watching Formula One races, gaming and spending time with her partner and their dog.
