Deliang Fan

After working in a faculty position at Johns Hopkins University, Deliang Fan is returning to the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. A former electrical engineering faculty member in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, part of the Fulton Schools, Fan is now coming back as an associate professor.

He looks forward to working with ASU researchers on artificial intelligence, or AI, chip design.

“ASU is a great place to build my career in semiconductor chip design and AI hardware research,” he says. “My family is also in Arizona. It’s home to me.”

As a child, Fan was fascinated by how semiconductor chips work.

“Being a researcher in computer engineering was always a dream for me when I was a kid,” he says. “It is always exciting to witness how fast the semiconductor area is developing, and I feel very proud to be part of it.”

Fan is teaching ASU’s EEE 334 Circuits II course, in which students learn circuit design concepts. He says students should be prepared to learn about the most advanced technologies in semiconductors and circuit design.

In the future, Fan aims to teach a course on building efficient computing hardware for AI.

Fan is a prolific researcher, having authored more than 170 research papers. He also has 15 patents awarded and pending and has served as a technical reviewer for more than 30 journals and conferences.

Fan has received numerous awards during his career, including a 2022 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) Award while at ASU; the 2022 DATE Best IP Award from the Design, Automation and Test in Europe Conference; and best paper awards from Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Association for Computing Machinery conferences. In 2022, he was also named among the top 5% of teaching faculty members in the Fulton Schools.

When he’s not working, Fan enjoys playing tennis and swimming.
