“The School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence is a wonderful place for a junior researcher to start a career,” Baoyu Zhou says.

Zhou joins the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University as an assistant professor in industrial engineering. He is a key part of plans underway in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence to expand its highly ranked industrial engineering program.

The early career researcher developed a love of mathematics at a young age. After receiving his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, he began to see industrial engineering as a space where math and applied science intersect.

Zhou received his doctoral degree from Lehigh University under the supervision of Frank E. Curtis. He served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan as well as in the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. He won the Van Hoesen Family Best Publication Award and received the Elizabeth V. Stout Dissertation Award at Lehigh University. He has organized sessions at numerous professional conferences, including ICCOPT, INFORMS and SIAM.

His research is focused on mathematical optimization. He designs efficient algorithms for solving large-scale problems that are constrained, nonlinear and stochastic. Zhou will begin teaching in the spring. In the meantime, he’s hopeful that the collaborative atmosphere in the Fulton Schools will lead to interesting opportunities to engage with his new colleagues.

“I look forward to building up my own research group and initiating interdisciplinary research collaborations,” he says.

Zhou’s past professional work includes research internships at Meta AI and at the Argonne National Laboratory, and he was an engaged mentor for doctoral and undergraduate students at both the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago.

He’s thrilled to take the next steps in his career.
