Zhou Dong

Zhou Dong will join the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, in spring 2027 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering.

His research interests include high-performance power converters, wide-bandgap device applications and protection for power-electronics-rich power systems. Dong earned his doctoral degree in 2022 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and he most recently worked as a principal scientist at ABB.

While working on electrical design projects during his undergraduate studies, Dong realized he had a knack for it and developed a growing interest in the field of power electronics.

Dong was eager to join the Fulton Schools due to its focus on transforming innovative ideas into impactful, real-world solutions.

“I believe engineering research should always begin and continue to be driven by real-world challenges,” he says.

He also recognized the electrical engineering program’s strong power and energy focus, as well as the opportunity for interdisciplinary research between power electronics and power systems. Dong says that joining ASU as a faculty member in the Fulton Schools represents an important career milestone.

“While it’s certainly an important career milestone, what makes it meaningful to me is the opportunity to build a research program and mentor students,” he says. “More than the achievement itself, I’m excited about what comes next.”

Dong hopes his students develop a strong physical intuition for how electrical systems work, enabling them to think beyond equations and confidently solve practical engineering problems.

At ASU, Dong and his research group will focus on addressing emerging challenges in modern power systems and developing technologies that make a meaningful impact through close collaboration with industry and academia.

Outside of research, Dong enjoys playing sports with friends, especially pickleball and table tennis. He also enjoys music and has been learning to play the piano.
