David Dandy
Professor of Practice, medical engineering
The Sun Devil community is proud to welcome David Dandy as the first Professor of Practice of medical engineering in the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering and the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
Leaving his role as a professor of chemical and biological engineering at Colorado State University, Dandy is now training the first cohort of physician-engineers for health system transformation in ASU’s new medical engineering programs.
“I look forward to launching a new medical school with an emphasis on engineering,” he says.
Dandy is bringing his entrepreneurial and engineering talents to Arizona, along with expertise in point-of-care medical diagnostics, microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip technology. He has applied his skills in chemical kinetics to optimize fluid unit operations in biosensing modalities.
He became interested in his field when he realized the critical role chemical engineers play in microsystems, and he looks forward to sharing his insights with students.
He is a founding member and chief science officer of Burst Diagnostics, a biotech company that empowers users with simple, accurate diagnostics, and is eager to continue researching new methodologies for detecting fungal pathogens.
Dandy plans to carry his commitment to cultivating excellence into his new role and hopes students develop a love of inquiry through his mentorship.
When asked what he was most proud of, he cited getting his new role at ASU, noting that it’s the first accredited chemical and biological engineering degree program in the country.
Beyond the lab and classroom, he is fascinated by the study of ancient indigenous people in the southwest U.S.
