Sam Dakka

Sam Dakka is joining the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, at Arizona State University, as a teaching professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

He brings his expertise in combustion and propulsion, aerodynamics, aircraft design and performance from the University of Nottingham, along with several rain jackets now doomed to collect dust.

Dakka developed an interest in aerospace engineering from a young age, having shown a natural inclination toward math, physics and problem-solving early in his education. He chose to progress his journey at ASU due to its strong commitment to collaboration and its inclusive environment.

“It highlights the nature of the interdisciplinary and innovative research being pursued here,” he says. “Also, the Fulton Schools have a conducive teaching and learning environment for all students, including minorities, to fulfill their aspirations.”

Dakka places high value on building a foundation for all to be successful. He has worked with deaf students to provide additional support sessions aimed at improving academic performance and reducing disparities in top degree classifications between student groups. He hopes his mentorship helps students develop dynamic critical thinking skills so they are prepared to solve challenges throughout their careers.

In research, he looks forward to investigating how different aircraft fuels influence aviation’s climate impact through radiative forcing mechanisms.

“The outcome and impact of this research will lead to the ability to control or mitigate the impact of climate change on our environment,” Dakka says. “This entails studying volatile and non-volatile particle emissions from the exhaust of aircraft engines for a variety of fuels, and their environmental interactions.”

Among his proudest achievements is winning a Best Paper Award from Aerospace, a renowned journal in his field.

Outside of the lab, Dakka has developed a passion for fine art and enjoys visiting art festivals and wine tastings. He also enjoys playing golf.
