Hai Liu
Assistant professor, electrical engineering
Hai Liu joins the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, as a new assistant professor of electrical engineering.
Liu began his career as a semiconductor packaging research and development engineer with Samsung Semiconductor, allowing him to develop real products and technologies. Liu earned his doctorate from the University of Southern California in 2022 and continued gaining industry experience in roles at InvenSense and Cisco, where he conducted advanced packaging research and development for semiconductor integrated circuits, sensors and silicon photonics.
Liu is excited to advance research in semiconductor packaging, chiplet integration and micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS, leveraging ASU’s strong engineering research and industry collaborations.
“I chose ASU for its leadership in semiconductor research, strong industry partnerships and collaborative, interdisciplinary environment,” Liu says. “It’s an ideal place to combine my industrial experience with academic research and to make a meaningful impact in this rapidly evolving field.”
Liu will begin teaching courses focused on advanced semiconductor technologies, emphasizing electronics and photonics packaging and MEMS, two critical areas driving artificial intelligence and next-generation hardware. In his courses, students will learn the fundamental principles of advanced semiconductor packaging and MEMS devices, exploring their real-world applications in state-of-the-art consumer, industrial and health care products.
“This role provides a unique opportunity to combine my industrial experience with academic innovation, pursue cutting-edge semiconductor technologies research and mentor the next generation of engineers,” Liu says.
Outside of research and instruction, Liu enjoys hiking and is excited to explore Arizona’s many excellent trails and landscapes.
