Xin Xu

Assistant Professor, engineering programs

Xin Xu is joining the Sun Devil community as an assistant professor in The Polytechnic School, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.

Before joining ASU, Xu served as a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, where he delved into the intricate mechanisms of solid-state batteries, a groundbreaking technology poised to revolutionize energy storage. His expertise lies in charge transport and electrochemical processes in electronic and ionic conductors, addressing critical energy and environmental challenges.

ASU’s inclusive culture fostering interdisciplinary collaboration convinced Xu that the university’s environment would significantly contribute to his research on clean energy. He is poised to spearhead pioneering research endeavors for sustainable energy solutions in energy storage and conversion technologies. He aims to investigate fundamental failure mechanisms in energy systems, driving the development of innovative energy materials.

Xu’s journey into energy research was sparked by concern for the global impact of fossil fuels on air quality and climate change. He envisions teaching an undergraduate course on clean energy, welcoming students from diverse backgrounds.

“I believe that combining various perspectives and skill sets is essential to addressing critical problems in clean energy,” Xu says. “Together, we can explore innovative approaches and foster an environment of collective learning and growth.”

He takes pride in mentorship and enjoyed his role as a mentor for the Research Experience for Undergraduates program at Stanford University.

“Witnessing my mentee’s enthusiasm and growth throughout the 10-week program was immensely gratifying,” Xu says. “I was especially thrilled when he decided to continue his group’s research beyond the program and I feel honored that he chose to work with me again this summer despite other enticing opportunities. It reinforces the importance of mentorship and nurturing young talent in our field.’

Beyond his academic pursuits, Xu enjoys playing strategic board games such as The Resistance: Avalon and The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow because they bring people together.
