Monica Perrin

Monica Perrin finds engineering, particularly in the field of construction, to be a new experience and learning opportunity every day. In her work so far, the first-generation college graduate has made impactful contributions to Arizona State University and the surrounding area. 

Joining the faculty of the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU, feels like coming home, she says. 

This is the second time Perrin’s career has brought her back to ASU since she graduated with her master’s degree in construction management in 2004. One of her career highlights is working as a senior project manager overseeing the design and construction of the Biodesign C and Rob and Melani Walton Center for Planetary Health buildings as well as the new pedestrian bridge over University Drive on the ASU Tempe campus. 

Biodesign C earned numerous awards, including the Engineering News-Record’s Best of the Best Project award for Higher Education/Research and was one of three finalists for ENR Project of the Year in 2018. 

Perrin also brings years of experience as a construction project manager for developers and project owners. She had the opportunity to gain experience in the environmental sector as an air quality inspector and permit engineer for Maricopa County. There, she was part of a team that won a national Environmental Protection Agency award for their efforts to reduce high levels of dust pollution in the county. 

Most recently, Perrin worked as a design manager at Intel, where she managed projects such as converting warehouse and office spaces into clean room facilities for microprocessor chip fabrication.

Now, Perrin is back at ASU in a new role as an assistant teaching professor while also pursuing a doctorate in construction management.

“I am so excited to work with the students and impart some real-world knowledge,” Perrin says. “The research and excitement at ASU is contagious, and I feel fortunate to be a part of it again. In my new role, I want to help the next generation find success in their future roles.”

This fall, Perrin is teaching CON 251 Microcomputer Applications for Construction and CON 448/548 Sustainable Construction. She says her students “should be prepared to experience some real-life activities they will encounter when they graduate.”

Outside of engineering, Perrin enjoys cooking and family time and has been involved in horse racing for most of her life. She loves animals and has raised horses, cows and currently her two dogs.
