Jiaqi Gu
Assistant Professor, electrical engineering
Jiaqi Gu sees a world of possibilities for advancing the capabilities of machine intelligence through emerging technologies. Gu, a new assistant professor of electrical engineering in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, believes the best way to move the microelectronics that enable these breakthroughs forward is for academia and industry to work together.
“The rapid development of the semiconductor and electronics engineering industry in Arizona shows a wealth of exciting research opportunities for me,” he says. “The School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering has a diverse group of faculty members who align perfectly with my research interests, and I see numerous cross-disciplinary collaboration possibilities with them.”
Gu is excited to explore the possibilities of design automation for advanced and complex semiconductor architecture for its use in robust, high-performance and efficient artificial intelligence as well as machine learning applications.
“I believe that ASU will be a perfect place for me to build my academic career and start an exciting journey together with the new generations of researchers,” Gu says.
He will teach EEE 425/591 Digital Systems and Circuits and oversee its associated lab portions. In this class, students will learn how to design, analyze, implement, simulate and optimize digital logic circuits while accounting for various parameters. Gu says the class will make students well-equipped for a career designing circuits.
He comes to ASU with an array of awards from his academic career, including a Best Paper Award from the Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference 2020 and first place in the Association for Computing Machinery Student Research Competition at the International Conference on Computer-Aided Design 2020. With the same research paper, Gu won first place in the association’s Student Research Competition Grand Finals 2021.
He has also won the Best Poster Award at the National Science Foundation Workshop on Machine Learning Hardware 2020, a 2021 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Transactions on Computer-Aided Design Donald O. Pederson Best Paper Award, the 2022 Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Optical Design Competition and the 2022–23 Margarida Jacome Dissertation Prize from the University of Texas at Austin.
When not working, Gu enjoys listening to music, watching movies and hiking with friends.
