Jamie Gorman
Professor, Human systems engineering
Jamie Gorman hopes to apply his robust teaching and research background in human systems engineering to expand the program at The Polytechnic School, one of the seven schools in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
The diversity of related research and academic opportunities is what brought Gorman to ASU, and he says he is “excited to work with other human systems engineering faculty and with ASU’s Center for Human, Artificial Intelligence, and Robot Teaming (CHART).”
Something he wants to pursue further at ASU is “bridging the areas of team science and dynamical systems modeling because they are such novel areas and much needed.”
Gorman explains that team science involves social scientific and cognitive psychology approaches, while dynamical systems theory traditionally involves objective, physical measurements.
“There is a burgeoning need for real-time, objective metrics of team performance and coordination in pursuing these dynamics across human-machine team states,” he says.
Gorman’s thriving research portfolio includes various projects funded by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Research Lab, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the U.S. Department of Education, among others. His projects have ranged from psychology topics to investigating human and artificial intelligence dynamics and human-machine teaming for space-based missions.
Gorman will teach the Foundation of Human Systems Engineering course this fall and, in the spring, a seminar course that will dive into team coordination dynamics with applications in human factors engineering.
He sees his new courses as an exciting opportunity to combine his previous knowledge to uniquely address emerging needs in the field of human systems engineering, including combining models of human-machine interaction that anticipate the need for change and intervention in real time.
When he isn’t researching or teaching, Gorman enjoys singing and playing his guitar in genres such as folk, punk, rock and country, ranging from the 1970s to the 2000s.
