YooJung Choi

When it comes to probabilistic reasoning and learning or trustworthy artificial intelligence, YooJung Choi is an industry expert.

“The focus of my research within artificial intelligence includes developing expressive probabilistic models and efficient inference techniques to support automated decision making,” she says. “I am also generally interested in building trustworthy machine learning and artificial intelligence systems to address concerns such as fairness and interpretability.”

Choi is eager to share her expertise with the next generation of the workforce in a new role as an assistant professor of computer science and engineering in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, one of the seven schools in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.

“I am excited to join the strong group of artificial intelligence researchers at ASU,” she says. “I am also looking forward to collaborating on interdisciplinary projects, for instance, for applications in health and social sciences.”

As she prepares for the fall semester, Choi says students of her CSE 575 Statistical Machine Learning course should expect to cover the foundations of machine learning algorithms. In addition, students will be able to implement and see some of the theory and algorithms discussed in class in action.

As for why she chose ASU, Choi says the size of the institution and its strength across disciplines was a selling point.

“I believe it will provide me with exciting opportunities to find new collaborations and to build an impactful research program,” she says. “I am also excited about the teaching and mentorship opportunities at a large institute like ASU.”

Outside of the classroom, Choi likes to spend her time traveling to new places, especially when it involves learning about history, stargazing and visiting national parks.
