Lin Li

Lin Li describes her teaching style as engaging, rigorous and inclusive. She is excited to put this philosophy to work as a new associate professor in the School for the Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy — part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.

“Mentoring students in research has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my job as a professor,” Li says. “In particular, helping students fulfill their potential to produce new knowledge is an amazing feeling.”

Li uses multiscale material mechanics models, computational and datatools to explore advanced materials for extreme environments, with emphasis on size effect, structural disorder, interfaces, mechanics and their roles on mechanical and mechanical-driven physical properties. She plans to incorporate this research on computational materials and mechanics into her curriculum.

After earning her doctorate in materials science and engineering from The Ohio State University, Li served as a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She continued her academic career at the University of Alabama before joining ASU. Li is the recipient of the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and the Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship.

When asked what motivated the transition to ASU, Li cites the innovative academic and research environment as well as the interdisciplinary opportunities offered across campus, but the most important pull was the people.

“ASU truly impressed me with its passionate students, professional staff and scholarly faculty, especially in the fields of computational materials and mechanics and artificial intelligence,” Li says.
