Alberto Scotti
Professor, Mechanical and aerospace engineering
Alberto Scotti is eager to bring his expertise in environmental fluid mechanics to Arizona State University and implement an engineering approach to solving environmental problems. He will join more than a dozen faculty members in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU who are leading research in fluid dynamics to address challenges in energy, transportation, environmental management, aerospace fields and more.
Before joining the School for the Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, one of the seven schools in the Fulton Schools, as a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, Scotti served as a professor in the Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. However, this will not be his first time at ASU. Scotti spent a semester at ASU in 2005 working in professor Harindra Fernando’s lab.
Scotti says he was motivated to pursue a career in engineering because he “always wanted to figure out how things work and how to build tools to better understand complex systems.”
This desire led Scotti to earn a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. His thesis research focused on the topic of hydrodynamic turbulence models.
Due to their inherent complexity, the scholarship of environmental flows is necessarily interdisciplinary. Scotti’s expertise includes computational, theoretical and experimental environmental fluid dynamics, oceanography, internal waves and stratified flows, extreme surface waves, sediment transport and stratified mixing.
He says he is looking forward to working across schools at ASU, especially those that share his interest in studying the ocean, as he begins this new phase of his career.
When not in the classroom or conducting research, Scotti likes to build and fly remote-controlled airplanes. He also enjoys spending time among the nature he seeks to protect through his sustainability research, climbing mountains and partaking in winter sports.
