Dajiang Suo
Assistant Professor, engineering programs
At the launch of his doctoral career, Dajiang Suo found himself intrigued by the idea of interconnectivity among individual entities, specifically a vehicle’s potential to communicate with other vehicles and surrounding infrastructure.
Prior to joining Arizona State University, his interest in this area led him to become a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he explored the cybersecurity and safety of connected and automated vehicles.
As one of the newest assistant professors of engineering at The Polytechnic School, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU, Suo says he is most looking forward to building partnerships with the local intelligent transportation communities. He adds that Arizona’s thriving innovation ecosystem is the reason he chose to embark on a career at ASU.
“I want to collaborate with the local industry to unlock the full potential of connected vehicles,” he says. “By cultivating cross-domain collaboration to enhance road intelligence, we might reduce the costs associated with developing perfecting sensing systems for each autonomous vehicle.”
Suo’s commitment to collaboration and innovation isn’t new. While contributing to the MIT Mobility Initiative, he recognized the significance of industry cooperation and helped develop critical partnerships between industry and academia. One of his most notable accomplishments stems from this initiative, in which he played an instrumental role in shaping the design of intelligent transportation infrastructure to support connected vehicles.
“I led a research project on connected vehicles that was jointly funded by a diverse set of partners, including automotive companies, infrastructure providers, component suppliers and insurance companies,” he says. “I look forward to bringing my expertise in this area to ASU.”
Suo plans to teach the principles of connected vehicles and intelligent transportation infrastructure in his Internet of Things courses at ASU’s Polytechnic campus and will encourage hands-on learning by using theory in practice to build connected devices.
While he enjoys connecting vehicles in his lab, connecting with nature is something Suo enjoys doing outside of the classroom, especially hiking.
