Eric Bishop

Lecturer, Information technology

Eric Bishop’s fascination with computers and their potential to change the world is what drew him to information technology. He also saw potential in impacting information technology education and decided to take his industry experience into the classroom.

Blending his interests in information technology and teaching led him to a career in education where he has spent the last 15 years.

“I am extremely student-focused and very approachable,” Bishop says. “I consider some of my biggest achievements to be helping students learn material at their individual paces and seeing how they apply the material and grow.”

Upon joining Arizona State University this fall, he is most looking forward to stepping into the school’s multicultural setting to meet his students and learn about their goals. Joining a diverse university was something Bishop felt strongly about.

ASU’s reputation for innovation was another reason Bishop chose to teach at ASU. With that mindset, he hopes to innovate the way hacking is taught by eventually developing an ethical hacking course within the information technology department.

Ethical hacking is one of his areas of expertise along with UNIX/Linux system administration, digital forensics and incident response. Bishop looks forward to delivering instruction in these areas through the courses he will be teaching — IFT 202: Foundations of Information and Computer System Security and IFT 250: Introduction to UNIX Utilities.

“All of my students should be prepared to study intensely, ask questions and be open to a variety of instructional and learning methods,” Bishop says of his student-focused methodology. “There are many ways in which students learn and I find it helpful to remind both my students and myself of this fact.”

Bishop shares his teaching methodologies through various conference presentations and workshops, and continues to diversify his skills through professional affiliations like the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE, and the IEEE Computer Society.

When Bishop isn’t in the classroom, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children, reading, traveling and doing CrossFit.
