Md. Shohel Rana

Md. Shohel Rana is an analytical thinker and problem-solver with experience in data science, mathematics and statistical model development. 

Rana joins the Arizona State University faculty in the spring as a software engineering lecturer in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, one of the seven Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU.

Previously, Rana has held teaching positions as a visiting assistant professor at Northern Kentucky University and as a senior lecturer at Daffodil International University in his home country of Bangladesh. 

Colleagues at Daffodil International University describe Rana as a creative and enthusiastic teacher and researcher. 

Rana earned his doctoral degree in computational science from the University of Southern Mississippi, after which he worked as a graduate teaching assistant. 

His published research has included deepfake and Android malware detection, techniques to reconstruct damaged images and approaches and solutions for distributed database problems. Rana has presented at numerous conferences on these and other topics. He has also written book chapters on Android malware detection as well as the design and implementation of web-based teaching and enhanced e-learning experiences. 

His other interests include machine learning, human-computer interaction, data mining and cybersecurity. 

Rana is a member of the Bangladesh Computer Society, a professional organization for information technology professionals to learn, facilitate research, share knowledge and enhance their careers. 

Before earning his doctoral degree, Rana worked as a software engineer, so he also brings experience in analyzing end-user needs to develop effective software to his new role.
