Outstanding Graduate, Fall 2024
Zach Barrington
Zach Barrington is honored to be named an outstanding graduate in construction management and technology at the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
“Construction is ever evolving, and ASU has helped me learn about the industry’s future,” he says.
Barrington knew ASU would offer him numerous opportunities for a successful career, as both his parents attended the university.
“I’ve always loved seeing things get built,” he says. “Construction management has allowed me to do that on a larger scale and gain valuable experience early on in my career.”
Among his many accomplishments, Barrington received the dean’s list award each semester and was a recipient of the Desert Star Construction Excellence in Luxury Home Building Scholarship, the Del E. Webb Foundation Finance and Accounting Scholarship, the Robert J. Wheeler Memorial Scholarship, the Jerry King Scholarship and the ASU President’s Scholarship.
One of the highlights of Barrington’s time at ASU was serving as president of the National Association of Home Builders student organization. The group worked on a large project that allowed him to network with professionals while learning about the home-building industry and advancing his leadership skills.
“It was a great experience to present our project at the International Builder’s Show in Las Vegas,” he says. “It took a lot of work to both build the project and plan the group’s travel to present our work.”
At the Fulton Schools, Barrington learned that networking is vital to career progress and connection.
“I learned how meeting new people, and treating others well is valuable in growing your career,” he says.
One of Barrington’s mentors, Assistant Teaching Professor Barry Kutz, was fundamental to his experience at ASU.
“He was the advisor for my student club and taught a few of my classes,” Barrington says. “He provided valuable career advice and helped me grow as a student and in my academic and professional careers.”
After graduation, Barrington will begin work as a construction estimator for McCarthy Construction in Phoenix.
“I hope to be involved in construction projects that provide value to the community and change people’s lives,” he says.
