Outstanding Graduate, Fall 2024

Alaa Eltahir

Alaa Eltahir’s path in information technology, or IT, as part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University has generated excitement for a rich field with wide-ranging opportunities.

“IT covers a broad range of topics — from cloud computing and web development to Linux systems, networking, cybersecurity and databases,” Alaa says.

This program, offered in The Polytechnic School, part of the Fulton Schools, has provided Alaa with a balanced, comprehensive perspective on the tech industry, equipping her with tools to tackle challenges across multiple domains.

During her time at ASU, she immersed herself in the university’s diverse community, making friends and building connections with mentors who provided insights beyond the classroom. She found joy in creating memories, participating in campus events and exploring new interests.

“ASU has given me memories and friendships I’ll treasure forever,” she says.

A proud accomplishment for Alaa was being named a fall 2024 Outstanding Graduate. She invested countless hours, facing the many challenges that come with a rigorous academic path. This award symbolizes her commitment to her craft and gives her confidence as she continues into the information technology Accelerated Master’s degree program, where she’ll specialize in information security.

Alaa’s impact extends beyond the classroom, particularly through her leadership roles in the National Society of Black Engineers, or NSBE, and the National Society of Leadership and Success, or NSLS.

As the Pre-College Initiative chair on the NSBE executive board, she developed a passion for encouraging younger students to explore STEM, coordinating events that highlighted the field. Her position as IT coordinator for NSLS further solidified her skills in adaptability, leadership and technical reliability.

In addition to the connections she made with her peers, Alaa also benefited from collaborations with faculty members and industry professionals.

“I was able to build a broad network of mentors and peers, learning from professionals who shared invaluable insights and experiences with me,” she says.

Looking ahead, Alaa aspires to make a positive impact on the accessibility of STEM education for underrepresented youth. She dreams of using technology to foster inclusive educational experiences that inspire young learners.

Her time in the Fulton Schools has given her the confidence and skills necessary to navigate complex problems with a critical lens, empowering her to serve the community and drive social change in information technology.
