Outstanding Graduate, Spring 2025
Jadyn Ocken
Going to Arizona State University felt like the perfect fit for Jadyn Ocken, who was born and raised in State 48. She found a program she was interested in, located close to home on the Polytechnic campus, in graphic information technology, or GIT. GIT is housed in The Polytechnic School, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU.
“It’s a blend of design and technology that gives both creative and analytical minds a place to grow,” Ocken says.
One course that challenged her was GIT 490 Advanced Commercial Photography, where she had to choose a brand and develop a three-photo series. Once finished, Ocken shared the finished product on her photography Instagram account and tagged the brand, Chamberlain Coffee. Not only did they notice the photos, but they reached out to discuss her creative vision, proving her hard work had paid off.
Outside the classroom, Ocken was very involved in campus life. In addition to serving as co-president of the Polytechnic Photo Club, she helped co-found the Photo Portfolio club, an organization that provides opportunities for students to build their portfolios. Ocken also assisted in reviving the GIT Club as vice president, hosting events for peers in her degree program.
She explored architectural photography and immersed herself in French culture while studying abroad in Paris over the summer. Ocken was also a part of the GIT Creative Agency, where she served as a photographer and creative director.
Her biggest achievements include winning several awards for her photography, such as “Most Creative + Originality” award in the I Paint My Own Reality Art Contest, several GIT awards, as well as Best in Show at the Polytechnic Photo Club Showcase. These accolades have confirmed her passion and skill for photography and creative work.
In reflecting on her time at ASU, she credits Chad Westover, associate teaching professor, as a faculty member who impacted her educational path.
“Professor Westover has been an extraordinary mentor, transforming my academic experience through engaging classes, unexpected opportunities and unwavering support,” Ocken says. “From generously opening the studio for my personal and client work to consistently challenging me to reach my full potential, he has been instrumental in my professional growth.”
Upon graduation, Ocken will stay in Arizona, seeking opportunities in the creative design space, while continuing her freelance work in photography and videography. She is excited to put into practice the skills she learned during her time at ASU.
