Convocation Speaker + Impact Award + University Outstanding Graduate, Spring 2025
Jake Okun
Jake Okun’s journey in robotics and autonomous systems in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University has led him to gain recognition as an Impact Award winner, Maroon Graduate convocation speaker and University Outstanding Graduate.
Okun’s passion for robotics and automation began early in his undergraduate years, where he embraced opportunities to engage in advanced research, industry collaborations and hands-on projects. His keen interest in improving efficiency and quality of life through exoskeletons, automation and AI led him to study robotics engineering, designing innovative solutions for industries across the globe. He has received numerous accolades for his academic excellence, including the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Director’s Award, Accelerated Master’s Award and Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Graduate Scholarship.
Throughout his time at ASU, Okun has been a strong advocate for mentorship and leadership. He has led outreach programs, including EPICS High, and founded the Building Engineering Solutions Today at Barrett, or BEST club, which fosters collaboration and innovation among engineering students. Okun’s commitment to supporting and guiding future engineers speaks to his dedication to both personal growth and giving back to the community.
One of his most notable projects was developing a passive exoskeleton to improve mobility and reduce physical strain, showcasing his ability to blend creativity with technical expertise. Okun’s long-term career aspiration is to continue innovating solutions that improve lives, while mentoring the next generation of engineers and future innovators.
Okun’s success has been further enriched by his collaboration with Thomas Sugar, an associate dean in Barrett, The Honors College and President’s Professor in the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks, who has been an instrumental mentor, providing Okun with invaluable wisdom. Over the past five years, Okun and Sugar dove deep into collaborative research, turning bold ideas into patented innovations. Beyond the lab and lecture halls, Sugar became a trusted mentor and steadfast supporter, meeting with Okun weekly to strategize and refine the art of engineering invention. Okun remains inspired and deeply grateful for Sugar’s unwavering commitment to his growth.
Looking ahead, Okun plans to remain in Arizona and develop his startup venture while pursuing his doctoral degree in systems engineering. With a passion for transforming industries through new technology, Okun is ready to become a leader in robotics and automation.
