Impact Award, Fall 2025

Nguyen (Michael) Do

Nguyen (Michael) Do embraced Arizona State University for its culture of inclusivity and open access.

“The idea that I could pursue my interests with support has been enriching, and I strive to carry that culture forward, working with others throughout my career after graduation,” he says.

Do graduates this December with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU.

During his time in the Fulton Schools, Do participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates program at Marquette University, working on micro-electromechanical systems and the Fulton Academic and Cultural Engagement program, taking part in leadership courses and mentoring opportunities. He also completed rewarding internships with onsemi and IBM Research.

He says his summer at IBM Research, working on advanced nanosheet transistor R&D, stands out as one of his most rewarding achievements.

“I got to work on advanced technology and worked with my team to submit a patent as a leading inventor for the nanosheet devices in the backside power area, as well as multiple IP claims to be reviewed for semiconductor technology,” he says. “I am very grateful for the experiences and mentorship I received during my time there.”

Do also conducted two Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative projects under the mentorship of Assistant Professor Kexin (Kathy) Li, one of which supported his honors thesis as a student in Barrett, the Honors College.

He credits Li for fostering his growth and being influential in advising his honors thesis.

“Dr. Li mentored my honors thesis and truly prepared me for future engineering journeys,” he says. “It was a very memorable and rewarding experience. During meetings throughout my project, she helped me improve communicating technical gaps and develop my presentation skills.”

Reflecting on his time in the Fulton Schools, Do says the idea of inclusion in engineering has been very impactful on his educational journey — a lesson he says will help guide him into his future career.

“I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who guided me at every step,” Do says. “Because of them, I hope to pay it forward and mentor students who might see themselves in my story.”

After graduation, Do plans to continue his studies at ASU in the electrical engineering Accelerated Master’s degree program and then return to IBM Research in Albany, New York, to work as a graduate hardware engineer.

“I want to pursue research and development in semiconductor and microelectronics,” he says. “I want to be able to create technology and devices that impact people’s lives in a meaningful way.”
