Outstanding Graduate, Fall 2025
Mataya Larson
Mataya Larson has always been drawn to the environment and protecting it. That made it easy for her to enroll in the environmental and resource management degree program in The Polytechnic School, part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.
Larson says she chose ASU because of the vast opportunities available to students.
“As one of the largest universities in the U.S., there is truly something for everyone at ASU,” she says.
During her time at ASU, Larson appreciated opportunities to develop both technical knowledge and practical skills, which she gained through hands-on projects, such as designing sustainable waste management systems for local industries, reviewing countless environmental impact assessments and managing renewable energy solutions. She especially enjoyed collaborating with peers on research and community-based initiatives for sustainable companies. She also became involved in important student organizations on campus.
“Being a member of student groups such as Women in Law and Women in STEM allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to real-world sustainability challenges,” Larson says. “These experiences helped me grow as an engineer and problem solver, while transforming me into an advocate for environmentally responsible solutions.”
One of the most valuable skills she takes away from her experience in the Fulton Schools is the ability to work in a group setting. Throughout group projects, she learned that combining the strengths of a diverse group of people can elevate the final outcome. She says that for her, teamwork is essential to success.
Larson says that Kiril Hristovski, an associate professor in the environmental and resource management program, made a significant impact on her and was always available when she needed guidance.
“What stood out most was how he was always encouraging me to think independently,” Larson says. “Instead of giving direct answers, he would ask probing questions that helped me learn to reason through complex problems on my own.”
Larson is also thankful for people like Ira A. Fulton, who invests in the lives of students. Without their generosity, she may not have had the opportunities that she did while at ASU.
After graduation, Larson plans to continue her education by attending law school in Canada with a focus on environmental law.
