Outstanding Graduate, Spring 2020
Ashley Colaizzi
Ashley Colaizzi knew that construction engineering was the right major for her because of her drive to make the world a safer and better place. Through her classes and extracurricular involvements, Colaizzi is making this a reality.
“A memorable project I worked on was for my construction management class,” says Colaizzi. “I had to create a report and PowerPoint about a job on the whole construction process along with analysis and data collections. It helped me gain perspective on how essential productivity is for certain trades, as it can affect the schedule and other trades’ work.”
Colaizzi learned not only about the construction process in her classes, but also how to be creative in generating solutions.
“Engineering is never the same,” says Colaizzi. “There are always new problems to be solved which are constantly changing. The people in the industry make it fun as well, especially working towards the same goal and accomplishing it as a group.”
As a student in the Grand Challenges Scholars Program and Sigma Lambda Chi, as well as a volunteer at several organizations in the valley, Colaizzi stayed involved both on and off campus.
“I would volunteer at Andre’s House regularly, which helps feed the homeless,” says Colaizzi. “I also did some volunteer work for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Feed My Starving Children.”
Colaizzi has started a full-time job as a field engineer at Willmeng Construction and plans on returning to ASU in the fall to earn her master’s in construction management through the Fulton Schools’ 4+1 program.
“My long-term career aspirations are to obtain my Professional Engineer license and my LEED certification,” says Colaizzi. “I eventually would like to be an in-house engineer, while being a superintendent for commercial construction. Then, further down the road, I would love to teach about construction at the college level.”
