Taman Truong

“When I joined the Fulton Schools, I knew I wanted to create a lasting impact on the community inside and outside of ASU,” says Taman Truong.

The student, who triple majored in computer systems engineering, electrical engineering and mathematics, will graduate with honors from the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and Barrett, The Honors College. Truong made the dean’s list each semester and has been named an Outstanding Graduate and winner of the Impact Award.

Truong is especially proud of his experience working on projects as part of ASU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Initiative, or SURI. He first completed an internship with Texas Instruments where he was part of a team that created a machine learning model to detect basic human gestures using microprocessor boards. He demonstrated the project at the Summer Research Symposium.

Next, he worked as an undergraduate research assistant under the supervision of electrical engineering faculty members, Professor Lalitha Sankar and Associate Professor Oliver Kosut, where he conducted several machine learning experiments concerning privacy algorithms and U.S. Census Bureau data

In a relatively rare move, Truong completed two capstone projects — one for computer systems engineering and the other for electrical engineering — plus an honors thesis.

Truong made an impact on his fellow students. He served as a volunteer at activities such as Open Door, the Homecoming Block Party and the Undergraduate Fall Welcome Event. 

He was eager to use mathematics to promote inclusivity and engagement in the Fulton Schools community. Truong successfully completed an internship at mathleague.org, where he created more than 100 problems and solution sets for competitions and hosted more than 50 contests. He also taught several classes, recorded helpful segments for YouTube and coached a small group of students to compete at the American Regions Mathematics League.

Truong is looking forward to a promising career after leaving school. 

He says, “I hope to share my knowledge and experiences with others and make a difference by solving problems bigger than myself.”
