Outstanding Graduate, Spring 2022

John Cody

When John Cody thinks of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, he thinks of the great professors whom he was able to study under during his time as an engineering management student.

“Their commitment to preparing students for industry stood out as one of the most important things that they conveyed,” he says.

One of the people who inspired Cody is Daniel McCarville, an industrial engineering professor of practice, who helped Cody to see the big picture of his program through in the class IEE 369: Work and Analysis and Design.

“That was the first time that I really understood the potential of what the program could do for me, and what I could do for a company once I graduated,” Cody says. “Professor McCarville gave me confidence that I made the right choice of major and that I really would be an important contributor to any company I joined.”

Cody selected engineering management with software as his focus area because he believes it is a great combination of engineering and business, and it will allow him to pursue multiple interests.

“I think the most interesting thing that I learned throughout the major was how process improvement can be applied to nearly every process instead of just the manufacturing applications that are commonly taught,” Cody says.

This spring, Cody served as the vice president of operations for the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) at ASU, a student organization focused on the professional development of students majoring in industrial engineering and engineering management. He also represented ASU at the IISE Western Regional Conference at the University of Southern California.

“One of my biggest achievements was helping our IISE chapter to grow and continue to recruit new members to get where it is today,” Cody says.

After graduation, he will be starting a position at Maskine, a Tempe-based company specializing in industrial automation, as an automation controls engineer.

“I will definitely take the knowledge that I have gained from the Fulton Schools,” Cody says. “But more than that, I will take the confidence in myself that I can learn anything given the effort and the time. This is extremely important as every problem is different and will represent new challenges.”
