Amy Hector started college as a business major before discovering graphic information technology, or GIT, through a family friend.

“She knew I liked graphic design, so she told me about the program,” Hector says. “I did some research and decided it sounded like a good fit for my goals.”

Hector says many people don’t know about GIT, and they find it surprising as a discipline within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University.

“It’s not traditional engineering,” she says. “But it’s a great intersection of design and technology that suits creative and analytical minds alike.

Hector says the end of her first semester in GIT was very challenging. But rather than getting frustrated, she was excited to push through and finish her projects.

“I realized I had finally found rewarding work,” she says, “and I knew that I wanted to keep finding those opportunities.”

During her time in the GIT program, Hector’s projects earned several first-place awards for photography, branding and print design. She also was named the GIT Superstar for two consecutive semesters and recently won outstanding student recognition for web design and development.

“I also appreciated the chance to lead creative fellow students as president of the Poly Photography Club,” she says. “My favorite achievement in that role was coordinating our bi-annual showcase in person after having to switch it to online during the pandemic.”

Hector is grateful to Professor of Practice Penny Dolin for helping to open many opportunities in design and photography. She also valued her experience in the GIT Creative Agency class with Lecturer Prescott Perez-Fox and her immersion in real-world design work with Prisma Graphics.

“I loved helping to develop new branding for the Si Se Puede Foundation and their new STEM center. It was a wonderful opportunity to work with a nonprofit focused on providing educational growth and development for underserved communities,” she says. “I was fortunate enough to redesign their website to match their new branding and I look forward to seeing the wonderful opportunities the center will create for students.”

Following graduation, Hector will begin graduate studies in GIT as part of the 4+1 accelerated master’s degree program at ASU. She then plans to find a position with a small- or medium-sized design agency.

“I specialize in web design, but I appreciate being hands-on in many other facets of design,” she says. “So, eventually, I also would like to start my own photography business on the side.”
