ASU Faculty Grapples With AI Use Ahead of Final Exams
Some ASU teachers are frustrated by failing to find effective ways to deter students from using AI to cheat on classroom tests, especially final exams, as well as to complete class coursework and related assignments. Anoop Grewal, a Fulton Schools associate teaching professor, says use of AI is creating discrepancies between student’s performance on quizzes and their actual understanding of concepts being taught in classes. Grewal says AI can, for instance, be beneficial in helping students in introductory courses to more clearly visualize certain aspects of coding, for instance, but widespread use of AI can also inhibit students’ actual grasp of important fundamental concepts they will need to fully comprehend and apply to successfully pursue their professional aspirations. Related issues are discussed in the commentary Keep Ai Out of My Classrooms, published in The State Press, in which Fulton Schools electrical engineering student Anthony Priego and Professor K. Selcuk Candan, a specialist in developing AI techniques and tools, comment about certain problematic issues that can arise from some uses of AI in higher education.
