Bhavik Bakshi
Julie Ann Wrigley Professor, chemical engineering
Bhavik Bakshi is the embodiment of a visionary academic: a seasoned educator and a passionate advocate for sustainable engineering.
As the Julie Ann Wrigley Professor in Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, Bakshi assumes a prominent role in shaping a sustainable future for engineering education and research. In this new role, he looks forward to establishing a center to find solutions to transition the chemicals and materials industry to a net-zero emissions future.
“Such research is urgently needed to address some of the greatest challenges facing humanity,” Bakshi says.
He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new position. Prior to joining ASU, Bakshi held the title of Richard M. Morrow Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The Ohio State University.
“My degrees are in chemical engineering because the field brings together chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics to address societal challenges,” Bakshi says. “I have stayed in the field to develop technological solutions that are ecologically viable, socially desirable and economically feasible.”
With joint appointments in ASU’s School of Sustainability, School of Complex Adaptive Systems and the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, part of the Fulton Schools, Bakshi aims to elevate sustainability research and education at ASU by bridging research activities between the units.
His contributions to making engineering processes more sustainable have earned him recognition from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, which honored Bakshi with awards for achievements in sustainability, environment and computing. One of the awards he is particularly proud of is the Computing in Chemical Engineering award, which Bakshi received for expanding process systems engineering to consider product life cycle, economic and ecological factors and for pioneering methods that guide industries toward net-zero emissions and environmentally beneficial decisions.
Beyond the academic realm, Bakshi finds solace in the great outdoors, engaging in activities such as hiking, backpacking and birding. With a zeal for conservation, he is eager to delve into local biodiversity and cultivate native plants in his yard.
