Impact Award, Fall 2019

Yousef Alroomi

Ever since Yousef Alroomi was a child, he wanted a career with which he could change the world. Inspired by his uncle, a mechanical engineer, Alroomi chose to pursue engineering to make an impact through innovation.

“In my opinion, the most important discoveries are done by engineers,” Alroomi said.

When he began studying industrial engineering in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, Alroomi realized he had found his passion.

“When I first took the industrial engineering classes, I realized that I am not only getting good grades, I am also loving the concepts,” he said. “Studying the major that you admire will help you succeed and also have fun when studying. I will do my best to excel in industrial engineering and change the world.”

Having grown up in Kuwait, Alroomi came to Arizona State University on a scholarship from the Kuwait Culture Office because ASU provides “an amazing environment to international students.” With ASU being the top public college chosen by international students, he felt the choice was clear.

Alroomi found guidance from Lecturer Cheryl Jennings who was his mentor when he worked as a teaching assistant. He also learned study skills from Principal Lecturer Linda Chattin, as she “gave amazing lectures and explained concepts very well.”

A committed and determined student, Alroomi earned his spot on the dean’s list in fall 2017, spring 2018, fall 2018 and spring 2019.

Outside the classroom, Alroomi was part of the U.S. branch of The National Union of Kuwait Students.

“I believed that I could give something back to the other students,” Alroomi said. “I helped new students settle and adapt to the new culture.”

This fall Alroomi has been recognized for his exemplary academic performance and will graduate as an IMPACT Award winner from the Fulton Schools. For students still working to pursue their degrees, he suggests that they “embrace every moment and live them to the fullest.”
