Impact Award, Spring 2019

Mark Kapron

From a young age, Mark Kapron’s mom instilled in him a passion and curiosity for education, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

Kapron’s love of learning led him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a minor in engineering management from Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

“I wanted to ensure I was prepared to be a well-rounded engineer by the time I graduated,” says Kapron, who is graduating with honors from ASU’s Barrett, The Honors College. “I believe the classes I took for my minor provided me with many useful tools that will prove to be valuable in a real-work environment.”

Beyond the classroom, Kapron was a member of ASU’s EcoCAR3 team for the national Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition and completed two semesters of the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative. In FURI, he researched the use of affordable remote sensing devices to create a map of forces applied to a gymnast’s ankles during their competitive performances and conducted performance tests on perovskite solar cells.

Kapron also served as a product engineering intern at Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology, and a platform systems engineering intern at Boeing, an aircraft manufacturing company.

Kapron’s most fulfilling experiences are the result of his natural inclination to mentor and help others. For three years, he served as a community assistant in the upper-division housing community for students in Barrett. He was also an undergraduate teaching assistant for two semesters.

“I have a burning desire to help others be successful in their academic careers because education is close to my heart,” says Kapron. “It has felt very natural for me to mentor students and promote a successful education experience.”

Kapron also participates in Page Turners, a club that motivates and encourages young students to read. He tutors elementary school students at a local public library in Tempe, Arizona, to help them improve their literacy skills.

After graduation, Kapron will complete a second summer internship in the Boeing aviation company’s flight controls group. He also plans to complete studies for a master’s degree in electrical engineering in the next year through one of the Fulton Schools 4+1 accelerated graduate degree programs.
