Outstanding Graduate, Fall 2018

Daniel Travis

For Daniel Travis, the opportunity to give back to the community is one he cherishes.

“As a veteran who once failed out of college and returned to school after a long term in the military, I wanted to make my college experience truly mean something,” Travis says. “To do that, I got involved with just about every facet of school life that Arizona State University had to offer.”

Travis served as a veteran representative for ASU’s undergraduate student government from 2015 to 2017. He served as the executive chair and recruiter for Sun Devils UNITE Week, a week of philanthropy, education and service hosted by ASU and the Valley of the Sun United Way. He also served as co-chair of ASU’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, an event for which he and his team received a Pitchfork Award.

“These positions helped me get involved in the community and try to make as much of an impact as possible,” says Travis. “I received the Presidential Volunteer Service Medal from the Office of the President of the United States twice due to community service hours.”

The Barrett, The Honors College student’s involvement didn’t end there. He presented his honors research paper at the regional Institute for Industrial and Systems Engineering conference where he placed fourth. Travis also received a Gold Standard Award in 2016 and a Silver Award in 2017 from the Golden Key International Honors Society.

Additionally, Travis worked as a peer career coach, helping students get interviews for potential jobs. He tutored international students in English and served as a free tutor to fellow veterans for math and science related subjects.

“I have tried to contribute as much as I could to the ASU community, being involved and taking in everything that was available,” Travis says. “I hope to leave a legacy where I am thought of as a person who tried to change the world in a positive way.”
